By: Robyn Allen and Destiny Basnight
(Woman speaking to a judge trying to plead her case. The spotlight is on her) Dialogue: Jessica Land: I am in love with a woman. I never thought I would be but I am and I want to have the closest possible bond one person can have with another. I want to get married. Only problem is right before I met her I was with a man. We thought we were in love and we wanted a baby. I am now pregnant, however I do not want this baby. When he left me he took everything and I don’t have the kind of money to bring a baby into this world. I want an abortion but no doctor will give me one. It's not fair to bring a baby into the kind of lifestyle my partner and I are currently living. Not that it’s any ones business. It's only my first month. I don’t know what to do. Not only that but no judge will marry my partner and I either. They all say it's wrong that we want to be married. If I wait much longer then an abortion would be unethical. I can’t have this baby. I want to be with my girlfriend! I want to be able to love and be loved! We aren’t hurting anybody! Why can’t we just live our lives in peace?! I won’t be able to care for this baby the way I want to. I can’t marry the woman I’m in love with. Why can’t I make my own decisions? I am a grown woman. I can't see what's wrong with the decisions I'm making but everyone looks at me like I'm the one who's doing wrong. In reality I'm being wronged.
Attorney: My client Mr. Jason Land does not approve of Mrs. Land, his soon to be ex-wife's decision to abort his child. The child coming into this world is not only Mrs. Lands but also Mr. Lands, therefore making the future of this child his decision as well. It is very well known that according to the law, a husband will be able to seek legal assistance if his wife has an abortion without notifying him. Assuming Mrs. Land was familiar with these rules, she should not have made a final decision of aborting her child without consenting with the father of the child. Mrs. Land states that she is no longer in love with this man but with a woman she is looking to marry but is that any reason to abort a child? She claims she will not have the money to support this child but if my client is willing to support the child to a certain degree then it seems that all her issues are solved. Jessica, will you not receive support from Mr. Land if you keep this child?
Jessica Land: Well yes, that is what he says now but..
Attorney: Thank you Mrs. Land. Now what would lead anyone to believe that my client will not stick to his word and support his child, if he did not plan to then why would he go through such trouble to prevent this child from being aborted. I completely understand that you have your rights Mrs. Land but your husband and your child have their rights also. You cannot win this case due to the fact that you want to marry a woman, and for selfish reasons.
